Midterm Planning and Design Document
Your instructor will expect you to meet the following objectives in completing the Midterm
Project:
Background
You are the lead Web developer for a small Web design company. Your manager has tasked
you to build a prototype website to showcase the Web design skills of the company. You can
choose the website purpose and goals, the only requirement your manager has is that it
must be professional. The content on the website does not have to be real, fictional
content is acceptable for this prototype.
Requirements
For the midterm project, create a new website that incorporates the following areas:
Three website goals:
Identify the website target audience:
Demographics and Document Your Findings:
http://www.sanctuarysupplies.com/
This website is laid out quite typically yet it is quite interesting as well. There are several
pages you can reach through the navbar on the left side as well as advertisements to the
right. In the middle there is a table with text to the top and bottom of pictures generated to
change and take four positions of different exotic animals. The colors are quite striking,
neon green on a black background. The graphics are all clickable hotspots. This site is
basically a supplies shop, but necessary to the website I am to create as the competition could
be intense with that being all that they provide. On the other hand, we will provide exotic
pets and supplies. The site had a very interesting and cool object on it, there is a menu that
follows you so that you can add items to your cart, view without adding, see the catalog
or visit your wish list without scrolling. This menu remains next to whatever you are
looking at on the page. Although this sites actually caters to Bengal tigers, Llama, and a
variety of reptiles, not to mention apes, their style is one to take note of.
This site is much closer to the exotic pets Angelique's carries. The site is done in tans and
earthy tones. It is laid out very simply with what looks to me to be frames on both sides, a
small navbar to the top left and the banner and logo on top. There are fewer pages and
their merchandise consists of exotic dogs and reptiles as well as the food they
consume. In actuality though it is a very interesting site as they have customer feedback
concerning services that have been provided to them. This site seems to be cost effective and
interesting all at the same time, pretty cool !

The next website I visited was an online exotic pet store with only one page and it consisted
of supplies only. Not too impressive.
http://www.reptilianexotics.com/
This site was pretty basically done, but they didn't have any pictures of the animals they
were selling. They have quite a list and a variety though. The site is done in light tones of
earthy colors with the navbar to the left and the pages are uniform. Actually quite boring.
http://www.animalsexotics.com/
This site was done on top of a background that was a tiled picture of the animal that they
sell. The site was quite uniform and the navbar to the left. The site looks to me like they used
a table with three columns and they left the right hand column to the tiled picture. I
thought it looked kind of lopsided, but other than that I thought it was well done.
Identify three scenarios how the target audience may access the website:
Julia Eisenhoover may be the 29 year old wife of the widely known 39 year old Eric
Eisenhoover in the beachfront property they rent out, but she still has to access the web
through a dial up 56k modem. Julia does almost all of her shopping online as her husband
pinches every penny they have ever received and that saves her quite a lot of money. (Perhaps
that's how they got to be so well off?) Julia has been saving her pennies to buy a companion
for herself. She has thought that some kind of an exotic animal could possibly be the key to
meeting and making friends in the area she is living in, as most people there seem to be quite
aloof. She has been surfing the web and googling to see what her options might be for some
time now, maybe Angelique's has the right animal with the right price.....
Kip Mason is a 21 year old University student in the beach area. He has just been voted
the person to decide and obtain a new mascot for the Phi Delta Hamna Hamna Club. He
studies very hard using the computer in the library at the university and at the public library
when there are none at the school. The University is new and has all the new equipment that
could possibly be availed. They have even got cable for the internet. Kip really loves to
study there as he can get almost twice the work done in half the time as opposed to when he
uses the library where he has to settle for a 56k modem that loads much slower. He has been
surfing the web for exotic animals thinking that something out of the ordinary would fit the
bill for his assignment. That might impress the club members and possibly get him a date with
the beautiful Jessica. (hmmm) Just in time does he come across Angelique's Exotic Pets and
Supplies; great prices and the site does the selling, which is exactly what the web pages are
supposed to do.
Brian is a sixteen year old high school student that loves the strange and unusual. He
and his family just moved to the beach area from a rather mediocre town in West Virginia.
He's a little bummed out though as in Virginia they could afford DSL, but the move to
California has set them back just a bit and now they have a 56k dial up modem for awhile.
Brian is just grateful though that he can get on the internet to surf at all. After all, he
needs it to study, which he does, but he goes off on side searches a little more than he probably
should. His parents told him however, that he could find himself a pet of his choice and they
would get it for him, as long as it is reasonably priced, of course. Brian has been looking for
a pet now for awhile, but as I mentioned before, he enjoys the strange and unusual. Maybe
Angelique's will have just what he's looking for....
