Market Research:

First I checked out Starbucks coffee houses and found that there is a lot more to them then meets the eye. Their Web site is quite nicely done, simple yet very effective. On a white background with a simple template, their green circular logo is in the corner of the banner which is placed on the top blending from the left corner. The text is chunked and the pictures are colorful. They use two navbars, the main one being across the top and then another to the left side. They have done a hierarchical site and in my opinion it looks quite nice and the feel is very comfortable. You can visit their site at http://www.starbucks.com/default.asp . They have music CD’s and events that can be found in your area by a search on their site. There is really quite a bit more to Starbucks then I had imagined.

Next I looked at a site for a coffee house by the name of the Acoustic Coffee House that can be found at http://www.mbus.com/clubs/genadm/Acoustic.Coffee.Lounge.htm. All they had was a one page advertisement but they are linked to another page called the magic bus which will give you links to the coffee shops in your area. Their page is bold…black background with red and white headings and light gray text. Nicely done and all information they have to give on one page.

The next site I visited, http://www.clairedelune.com was pretty nicely done in bright orange, yellow, purple and a deep blue for their banner and logo with pictures through out the site. They have coffee cups through out as a background. The navbar is on the top and consistent through the entire site. They have an entertainment calendar and a contact page as well as a map with directions on how to get there. There entertainment advertising has links to the Web sites of the entertainers. They have also a menu with the foods they serve as well. The site is extremely well done in my opinion and consistent all the way through.

The Talking Stick, http://www.thetalkingstick.net is quite similar to the Coffee Lounge that I will be doing the Web site for as far as entertainment with bands, poetry and art all included. They have too far to scroll on their page but the artwork is nicely done with a modern background of a mixture of yellow and an eggshell. The navbar is placed at the top with the logo and a hierarchical structure is what is used through out. In my opinion they use too many different colors, but for the most part it is a well put together site.

Java with Javelyn is an excellent site! The navbar is backwards but consistent and the graphics are wonderful. The colors are great together http://www.javawithjavelyn.com/jwj-cds.htm mellow shades of orange, black and white. I happened across this site as she is playing at the Talking Stick …pretty cool!!

End User Scenario’s:

Gerard is a college student that is 21 and just beginning his life away from home. He enjoys many different genres of music and would rather just frequent one place. He is not really a drinker but he does love his espresso. Drinking the same thing though can be boring. He uses a 56k modem to connect to the internet and do his studies in the dorm where he is living at this time and has been kind of searching for a local place in the Dallas area to go when he wants to relax and get away from the rush of University living. He ran across the Coffee Lounge and was impressed with the variety of entertainment and the variety of coffees as well and so intends to check it out next Wednesday night as there will be a poetry reading and that has him interested. Doing something different really has him excited and who knows, maybe he can make friends with people like himself that are bored with the mundane.

Cynthia has been out of college now for about a year and misses the hustle bustle of the college life. She is 27 and has been surfing the net looking for an interesting place to enjoy the companionship of other people her age but she really doesn’t care for the bar scene. She connects to the internet through DSL and has been looking at quite a few different possibilities. One day she ran across Coffee Lounges and found that there was one close to her area in the surrounding suburbs of Dallas. A million times she must have passed by without noticing this place before, but an add on the internet has shown her that it was there in a shopping center that she has passed by almost every day. She thinks it could be an interesting place to meet others who enjoy art as this place, the Coffee Lounge advertises that they have a particular place especially for people who enjoy expressing themselves in artwork called Exclamation Point and the name alone is enticing. She thinks as well maybe she will meet that certain someone with like interest who enjoys all genres of music and poetry along with the art. Someone not stuck in a rut, with an imagination and personality, so she thinks she will venture there tonight even though it is Thursday as they have a Jazz band playing and she just loves Jazz.

WORDS:

Expressions, Exclamation, Alternative, Different, Entertaining, Variety, Personal, Creative, Myriad, Socialize

METAPHORS:

Several metaphors came to mind thinking about this coffee lounge like “Expression with Attitude”, then I thought of “Expression from a Different Point of View”, but I thought it was too long. “Coffee Expressed Personally” just didn’t do it, not expressive enough, kind of bland. I thought of several more but I think I want to go with “Entertainment with Attitude ”. I think it sounds kind of up beat and exciting and would fit for an alternative type of club with the forms of entertainment that are offered.

ROUGH SKETCHES:

I really like these colors!  They are quite bold….

CoffeeLounge Sketch Two

I like this layout, the second one better because the featured coffee will stand out and the text will be more chunked…..

FONTS AND COLORS:

Gigi will be used for the logo and other text that can be inserted as a graphic with Lucida Handwriting and Bradley Hand ITC as next in line…hopefully not having to fall on the default of the user, in places that this font will be used as text rather than for a graphic.

Chillerwill be used for the majority of the chunked text with Comic Sans MS and Papyrus for back-up.

After seeing both of these layouts, I think I would like actually a cross between the two and the colors from the first one using a yellow rather than the white.  I like the way the second one is in the heart of the page as I think it will accentuate the feature of the month, but the banners and such are just too bland.  I think that a light color gray for the background would accentuate and make the purples not as sharp as well and use just a little of the red.

I plan on using a navagation system created in Dreamweaver and Fireworks with the .gif, over, down, and over while down system.  The rest of the links I think I will be as follows; a=lavendar, active=white or purple, hover= yellow and visited black or purple, I would really need to see how it looks with the rest of everything to completely make up my mind, but that will be the scheme of things.
